Comcast CableCARD update 2

April 16, 2005

The CableCARD issues continue; however, now Comcast is being proactive. I emailled the president of the company and he got the ball rolling.

Techs made sure that the line here at the house is fine. They then tried many more CableCARDs and they did not work. The previouis tech had done this as well.

The difference this time is that the tech, and the Senior Executive over Technical Operations of the company will start a dialog with Toshiba. Hopefully the two companies can figure out what is going on. My bet is that the Motorola CableCARD is not properly following the ANSI CableCARD spec and the TV is becoming “confused”. Who knows? The bright side is that everything is moving in the right direction.

I’ve had pretty much the same experience with my Toshiba/Comcast combo. I’m under the impression that it’s more of a Toshiba problem than a Comcast problem. Much to my dismay, I’m using the box. Toshiba has assued me that they are working aggressivly on the problem.

Same problem here in Michigan with my new Toshiba and Comcast cable. In my case, all the techs from Comcast seem to think that it is a problem on their end. They (3 techs over the course of 3 days, totaling more then 8hrs of “Hmmm…I dunno”) said that are running into this problem every where they have been installing cablecards. I also have called Toshiba they are sending me an update for my new TV…I’ll see if that works.

I’ve got a Toshiba 62hmx94. I’m using Adelphia, trying to get Motorola CabeCard to work. So far the first one has failed to be recognized by the TV – if I go into the Menu screens for instance, the CableCard selection is grayed out. Theoretically, tomorrow another cable tech is coming out with a new card. However, since I’ve yet to talk to any tech who has actually installed one, I’m less than optimistic.

What kind of symptoms have others seen with the Toshiba/Motorola setup? Several people have mentioned getting Toshiba involved for upgeades – any contact info?

    Thanks

    Jim,

Please see Comcast CableCARD Update 3: http://www.morph3ous.net/2005/05/24/comcast-cablecard-update-3/

Toshiba will be coming out shortly with a new firmware that will fix the problems that your TV is having.

There is lots of good information at DSLReports.com in the CableCARD Experience thread in their Comcast forum:

I recieved my ‘upgrade’ firmware from Toshiba and nothing has changed – they can still not figure out why the cablecard will not work. The firmware uploaded the new info and cycle through as it was suppose it but, no change once they installed the cablecard again. Still stuck on only one channel. Any help would be greatly appreciated…

The upgrade that you got is the old one. I upgraded to that one and did not have any success. A new one will be coming out soon that fixes these problems. I am currently running a beta version of the firmware (‘diagnostic firmware’) and my TV is working flawlessly with a Comcast Motorola CableCARD.

I advise you to wait until the new firmware comes out, and make sure that Toshiba ships it to you. This problem turns out not to be on Comcast’s end.

The new firmware is NOT the 94SEINE145 firmware. The 94SEINE145 firmware did not fix the Comcast / Motorola CableCARD problem. The new firmware should be out soon. I am not sure what version number it will be assigned. When I hear word that the firmware is released, I will post a new entry on this blog.

I just received the Seine 1.5 firmware upgrade for my 46HM94. It seemed to install OK although the TV did not cycle on and off automatically as it was supposed to. So far, no change. Still one channel and updating message on screen. I reinserted cable card with tv off and on with no luck. I’m waiting to hear back from Comcast and Toshiba service.

Got another upgrade from toshiba and it is still not working…it did work oddly enough for one night four days after the upgrade but, then failed to work the next day and has not worked since. When it was working it looked and sounded great. I am going keep riding Toshiba and Comcast until this problem is resolved.
