Honda to put hydrogen car into production
According to an article here: http://cars.blogs.ca/2006/02/06/hydrogen-powered-honda-fcx-to-go-into-production
Honda will be putting a hydrogen car into production. The car will likely not hit our shores soon, and if it does it will be in limited markets.
One thing that is particularly exciting is that Honda seems to have come up with a new more efficient fuel cell. Here is an excerpt from the article:
Many of the advancements with the new FCX center around Honda’s V Flow fuel cell platform. The cells are stacked vertically in the center tunnel and arranged in a vertebral layout (think of it as though the stacks are your backbones if you are lying on your back) for higher efficiency packaging as well as more efficient management of gas flow (from top to bottom). Another breakthrough was in the realm of storage, and with a newly developed higher absorption material in the tanks which allowed Honda to double storage capacity. The FCX can achieve a real-world driving range of over 500 km (350 miles).
That is definitely exciting because you will have a large range. Other hydrogen cars were unable to go as far. To tackle the lack of a fueling infrastructure, Honda has also come up with a large innovation. They call it the Home Energy Station (HES). It converts natural gas to hydrogen and also has the ability to generate some power for your home as well.
I forsee natural gas prices continuing to skyrocket until we get a better supply. The article states that all of this leads to a 40% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. I am not sure if those numbers originally came from Honda.
It looks like we are slowly beginning to move in a better direction. Fuel cell technology is starting to look more and more feasible.
