You are right, the energy must come from somewhere. Hydrogen is not this magical source of power. I think that the ability to harness this energy while emiting less carbon dioxide is what makes the whole hydrogen economy interesting.

If we can produce the equivalent of the power in a tank of gas and in the process generate half of the CO^2 that would have been produced burning it, then this is most definitely moving in the right direction.
