I belong in an age when computers were not said to multitask, but rather to timeshare. When the thought of asking a person to multitask would be laughable because people took pride in doing a job and doing it well, something not possible when juggling too much at once. A time before the constant nagging annoyance of 75 emails a day (none spam, but only about 15 from people). Before the overhyped web 2.0 technologies enabling Facebook & (ugh) Twitter. Will we be the generation of information overload? It seems like useful information is being drowned in the sea of the irrelevant. Let’s create a holiday where we do not check email or Facebook. A sacred day where we “accidentally” leave our cell phones at home. It will be a time for talking in person to people. What should we call it? National disconnect day. No Information Vacation. Freedom from tedium day (or week?). You tell me, but I want it!

After my post:10 Reasons You Should Not Get a Job – Steve Pavlina, I started my consulting business back up. My old clients are happy that I have decided to pursue this career path anew. I am concerned as to whether I will be able to consult enough in order to make a living; however, am going to give this a shot. My goal is to learn to better promote myself while still looking out after my clients’ best interests. I love consulting as it is a very rewarding career. It is unlike any of the “traditional” jobs that I have held thus far. The job seems more real and important. I know that I am making a difference as the results of my work are right in front of me. I can clearly see the value that I provide. There are some downsides to consulting. One is that pay depends upon time spent. Clients pay an hourly rate for your time. To get around this I plan to bill some business clients by projects. This would entail speaking with the business owner in detail about what needs to be done, and then coming up with a formal proposal. I [...]

Right now I am between jobs. My previous employer was acting a bit strangely. They confiscated some of my personal property, a notepad I brought to work, while I was in another office and did not tell me. I only noticed this after I went to look up some information in the notepad only to find the page missing. Naturally, I refused to continue working for the company. I recently came upon the post 10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job by Steve Pavlina. The points made are very insightful; however, I have some resistance to them. Here are the major points (paraphrased) and my reactions to them: It is not smart to be in a position where you are only making money while spending time at work. It is far better to find an opportunity where you make money regardless of time spent. I definitely agree with this point; however, it really takes an entrepreneur to be able to recognize these types of opportunities. It would definitely be better to continue to receive revenue regardless of hours worked. One of the ways Steve Pavlina appears to do this is through advertising on his website, and donations from those [...]
