I’m watching something scary. It made me understand how people can be indoctrinated into any school of thought. People believe that which incites their emotions must be true. But what if the reason you have the feeling is because those spouting the doctrine are simply tapping into universal fears or desires? You can do the right thing and be a good person without having an external reason to do so. You can also be a horrible person if you choose. I feel the biggest reason to be good is the feeling it gives you. It doesn’t matter to me whether or not there is an afterlife. To be good so you supposedly don’t go to hell is a selfish or fearful act & whether or not there is a heaven or hell is completely irrelevant. Think critically, and be yourself!

I belong in an age when computers were not said to multitask, but rather to timeshare. When the thought of asking a person to multitask would be laughable because people took pride in doing a job and doing it well, something not possible when juggling too much at once. A time before the constant nagging annoyance of 75 emails a day (none spam, but only about 15 from people). Before the overhyped web 2.0 technologies enabling Facebook & (ugh) Twitter. Will we be the generation of information overload? It seems like useful information is being drowned in the sea of the irrelevant. Let’s create a holiday where we do not check email or Facebook. A sacred day where we “accidentally” leave our cell phones at home. It will be a time for talking in person to people. What should we call it? National disconnect day. No Information Vacation. Freedom from tedium day (or week?). You tell me, but I want it!

There is additional analysis of the situation that I first mentioned in this post. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is of the opinion that the Obama Administration’s Department of Justice is worse than that of Bush. Here is an excerpt from the EFF’s take on the situation: Previously, the Bush Administration has argued that the U.S. possesses “sovereign immunity” from suit for conducting electronic surveillance that violates the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). However, FISA is only one of several laws that restrict the government’s ability to wiretap. The Obama Administration goes two steps further than Bush did, and claims that the US PATRIOT Act also renders the U.S. immune from suit under the two remaining key federal surveillance laws: the Wiretap Act and the Stored Communications Act. Essentially, the Obama Adminstration has claimed that the government cannot be held accountable for illegal surveillance under any federal statutes. Again, the gulf between Candidate Obama and President Obama is striking. As a candidate, Obama ran promising a new era of government transparency and accountability, an end to the Bush DOJ’s radical theories of executive power, and reform of the PATRIOT Act. But, this week, Obama’s own Department Of Justice has argued [...]

Please read this analysis on Salon. I hope that the administration responds and clarifies some of their language if the analysis does not reflect their intent. http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/04/06/obama/index.html: Every defining attribute of Bush’s radical secrecy powers — every one — is found here, and in exactly the same tone and with the exact same mindset. Thus: how the U.S. government eavesdrops on its citizens is too secret to allow a court to determine its legality. We must just blindly accept the claims from the President’s DNI that we will all be endangered if we allow courts to determine the legality of the President’s actions. Even confirming or denying already publicly known facts — such as the involvement of the telecoms and the massive data-mining programs — would be too damaging to national security. Why? Because the DNI says so. It is not merely specific documents, but entire lawsuits, that must be dismissed in advance as soon as the privilege is asserted because “its very subject matter would inherently risk or require the disclosure of state secrets.”

In my experience, the most productive people plan ahead. It is impossible to plan everything, but there is a certain degree of planning that is needed. One must first understand what they are getting themselves into. These are the strategies that have helped me. I am absolutely sure that I have read these somewhere else and they are not my own creation. (I would post a link if I remembered.) Ensure that you clearly understand the goal of the project. Seek clarification if needed. Break the project into its major parts. Assign an importance level to each part. Roughly estimate the skills needed for each part and the time that it will take. Overestimate by 15-20%. No one is 100% efficient. If this sounds an awful lot like common sense, that’s because it is. The problem is that it is easy to forget common sense when you are harried because of pressure from your superiors, internal pressure, or realize that your deadlines may be impossible to meet. In analyzing what needs to be done, you may come to the realization that there is no way that you are going to be able to meet the deadline. This is something that [...]

Note to the American people, the words liberal and conservative are useless. These words are thrown around instead of intelligently debating the issues at hand. We need to express exactly what actions a government official has taken that we feel are clearly wrong, or what a news personality said that we feel distorts the facts. Why do I feel it is so important that we have more intelligent discourse and stop bickering using words that are too general to be of use? Some very scary things have been happening in the United States. I am not going to point fingers because it would obscure my point and invite useless partisan phrase-throwing. Right now I do not care who’s fault it is, I just want to see some action from our government that reassures me that they are serious about protecting what makes our country great. September 11th, 2001 was a horrible day that will live in infamy. Al Qaeda perpetrated a series of horrific attacks against our nation. Note that I said Al Qaeda and not terrorists. We need to be very precise with our language as to not over-generalize. The people of this nation stood together after the attacks. [...]

Microsoft has recently released its Zune DAP. One exciting feature is the ability to share all of your songs via wireless to your friends. There is a problem. Medialoper: Zune’s Big Innovation: Viral DRM: Unfortunately Zune’s wireless music sharing is turning out to be one of those features that seemed better when it was just a rumor. While Zune users will be able share music with friends, there’s a catch isn’t there always. As Jim noted earlier, recipients of shared songs will only be able to listen to them three times or for three days, whichever comes first. It sort of sounds like a really bad tire warranty. This might make sense at first glance, but there is a problem. DRM is added to files that did not previously have it. More and more content is being licensed under the Creative Commons. (This blog’s content is licensed under the Creative Commons license.) To add DRM to a music file that has been released under the Creative Commons is a violation of the license. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Steve Irwin was known as being a bit on the wild side. He took lots of chances while taping his shows. This was a display of how connected he felt with nature. Irwin had set up Australia Zoo, a wildlife park. The site is unfortunately down at the moment. From Steve Irwin’s Wikipedia entry, Environmentalism: Irwin was a passionate conservationist and believed in promoting environmentalism by sharing his excitement about the natural world rather than preaching to people. He was concerned with conservation of endangered animals and land clearing leading to loss of habitat. He considered conservation to be the most important part of his work: “I consider myself a wild-life warrior. My mission is to save the world’s endangered species.” Irwin bought “large tracts of land” in Australia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the United States, which he described as “like national parks” and stressed the importance of people realising that they could each make a difference. From Steve Irwin’s Wikipedia Article, Death: Shortly after 11:00 a.m. local time (0100 UTC) on 4 September 2006, Irwin was fatally pierced in the chest by a short-tail stingray barb while diving in Batt Reef (part of the Great Barrier Reef), off the coast [...]

Found this from:Hugg / The American Voting System: HACKED Watch this video, and I think that you too will be convinced that we need to have a paper trail in our elections. Not even just a paper trail that is printed out at the end of the day at each polling station. We need to have each voting machine print our vote in front of our very own eyes. We then need to be able to confirm that the information is indeed correct, and then place it in a locked ballot box. I remember the first time that I used one of those machines I remarked to one of my friends how I did not trust them. This is coming from someone who has been working in IT all my life.
The GPLv3 license is in the works. One of the provisions is to restrict software from using DRM. This, argues Linus Torvalds, is not the job of a license. He is against these new provisions. The article below goes on to defend the license. I have been deeply against DRM for some time. Linus Torvald’s objection to the license really makes me think. He is the one who got the linux operating system going. I respect his point of view, and am not sure on which side of the fence I stand about the license itself. I am still against DRM. NewsForge | Stallman, Torvalds, Moglen share views on DRM and GPLv3: To understand why FSF thinks of DRM as restricting users’ freedom, one needs to understand the meaning of copyleft and the essence of the GPL. This license upheld the four provisions of copyleft: (a) the freedom to use the software, (b) the freedom to copy and share the software, (c) the freedom to modify the software (this requires the source code to be available), and (d) the freedom to run and distribute modified software. The use of DRM to disallow freedoms (c) and (d) is what FSF doesn’t [...]

The wisdom of the crowd is definitely a powerful force. TheStar.com – Wikipedia handles Colbert: …Colbert stated, if enough people alter the page on Wikipedia, it’s fact. It should have been the biggest threat to the institution of Wikipedia to date. It was a condemnation of the site’s credibility. And it didn’t come from the Times, or from some retired political refugee from the Kennedy era. It came from someone cool. Colbert, after all, has some serious credibility among the crowd who use and contribute to Wikipedia. Within a day, Colbert’s report had hit some of the Net’s geek nerve centres, Slashdot.org and Fark.com. Wikipedia’s protection log was recording ongoing attempts at vandalism. There was just one problem with the prank: Colbert was ultimately proven wrong.
